‘Deadpool 2’: What Did You Think?
The second coming ofDeadpoolhas arrived. The Merc with a Mouth has returned in a sequel that is just as raunchy and silly as the first, but brings a bigger dose of blockbuster comic book action along with it. But what did you think?
Deadpool 2was directed byJohn WickandAtomic BlondehelmerDavid Leitch, and moving on from the first film’s director Tim Miller worried some fans. But withRyan Reynoldsstill on board, and writersRhett ReeseandPaul Wernickreturning to script, they hoped for the best. So what’s the end result? Is it a satisfying sequel? Does it improve upon the first or is it just more of the same?
The reviews on Rotten Tomatoeshave the movie sitting with an 84%and the audience score is only a bit higher at 85% (at the time of this writing). Here’s what the critical consensus says:
“Though it threatens to buckle under the weight of its meta gags,Deadpool 2is a gory, gleeful lampoon of the superhero genre buoyed by Ryan Reynolds' undeniable charm.”
Indeed, Deadpool’s fourth wall-breaking antics may have lost some of their novelty and charm now that we get what Deadpool is all about. But the movie still delivers ample amounts of laugh that will satisfy fans. Our own Jacob Hall says:
DEADPOOL 2 doubles down on what makes the first movie work while also convincing me that the character can actually function in a proper ensemble X-Force movie. It’s eagerness to please can be exhausting, but I was won over early and often.

His mention of the “exhausting” side of Deadpool is important. BecauseDeadpool 2feels like it does go on for a little too long. It’s almost like when a kid figures out that he has a great joke that makes his parents laugh, he keeps trying to replicate that same response, and it has diminishing returns.
Both myself and Peter Sciretta are somewhat on the same page:
I had heard positive things about#Deadpool2. Saw it tonight and it’s just fine. It is better directed and written but lacks the surprise of the first and is way more obnoxious and exhausting. Some funny bits but maybe just not for me.

#Deadpool2is hilarious, but I didn’t love it. Maybe the novelty has worn off a bit. Maybe the attempted stakes and elevated action in the movie don’t mesh as well with the meta humor of Deadpool. It’s an improvement in filmmaking quality, but it feels like something is missing.

Meanwhile, our own Chris Evangelista, who hated the first movie, found himselfenjoying the hell out of the movie. He wrote, “Deadpool 2is an improvement on the first film in nearly every single way.” He went on to praise better direction, superior action sequences, funnier jokes and fantastic new supporting characters.
But our review from Josh Spiegelwas less impressed, as he wrote:
“Much like its predecessor,Deadpool 2is less a movie than a smirky, feature-length meme generator. Though the sequel has a new director and some new cast members,Deadpool 2is unsurprisingly doubling down on what made the first film such a big hit, including jokes about exactly how big of a hit at the box office it was, as well as plenty of other fourth-wall-breaking moments. Considering that the original was successful, it’s somewhat predictable that this sequel is going to the same well of snark and glib ultra-violence, but this is just as obnoxious as its predecessor, if not more so.”
